Toward a More Just Society and Health Care System: The Role of Academic Medical Centers
In this session, Chair of the AAMC Board of Directors Peter L. Slavin, M.D., speaks on the obligation to address crises that threaten the health and safety of our communities. Focusing on racial health disparities that exist in America, Dr. Slavin outlines the approach of the Disparities Solutions Center that was established in 2004 at Massachusetts General Hospital. He emphasizes the need to uncover the biases that exist today in health care so that every human being is treated with dignity and equality.

Crossing the Inequality Chasm
AAMC President and CEO, Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., stresses the obligation of health professionals to view the issue of inequality through the lens of ethical commitment – not political ideology. Using the backdrop of current events, Dr. Kirch speaks about inequality in health care for the mentally ill, health disparities facing our military and veterans, conscious and unconscious bias faced by the LGBT community. He points to some successful initiatives at several academic medical centers, and he calls on educators, CEOs, scientist, and health professional, to contribute to health equity and community health.
